Microcurrent Therapy

Microcurrent Therapy

11-8-07: Microcurrent Therapy is temporarily unavailable at Urgent Cares. Please check back later for updates.

Professional athletes have benefited for years from this non-invasive, pain-free treatment that quickly helps heal injuries. Now you can receive the same healing benefits at Sisters of Mercy Urgent Care South. Microcurrent Therapy effectively reduces pain and promotes
faster healing for the following conditions:

  • Acute and chronic sprains and strains
  • Arthritis
  • Tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Fractures and sprains
  • Torn muscles and ligaments
  • Neuralgias
  • Overuse injuries such as carpal tunnel
    and tennis elbow
  • Neck and back pains
  • TMJ problems
  • Headaches
  • Neuromas
  • Pinched nerves

Because this therapy delivers a treatment that differs from other types of pain management, it is often effective when other treatments have failed.

How does Microcurrent Therapy help reduce pain and promote faster healing?

The human body is an electromagnetic system; individual organs, tissues and cells generate different electrical frequencies that change with disease and injury. This technique incorporates various low voltage electrical frequencies, applied with specific procedures to injured tissues. Microcurrent Therapy helps return your body’s electrical current to a normal activity level by improving circulation, cell metabolism, protein and nutrient use and the release of endorphins. All these improvements reduce pain and inflammation, accelerate healing and help the body heal itself.

How is the treatment applied?
We use two machines: the Electro-Acuscope and Electro-Myopulse. These machines are FDA-approved. A skilled technician administers the treatments. The treatments are similar to ultrasound, applied using a gel and brass probe to specific trigger points. Some patients may feel a slight tingling sensation, but most patients feel nothing.

How do these machines work?
An electrical frequency set at very low intensity is applied to injured muscles, tendons and ligaments according to standard protocols. This treatment typically results in a decrease in pain and inflammation and an acceleration of healing. The Electro-Myopulse and Electro-Acuscope machines include a large variety of current patterns and intensities and also provide a feedback mechanism. The machine monitors the electromagnetic condition of the tissue being treated and modifies the input to the tissue based on that information. The Electro-Myopulse is mainly used in muscle, tendon, ligament and bone, and the Electro-Acuscope is mainly used for nerve healing as well as for electroacupuncture and biofeedback. The Electro-Acuscope/Electro- Myopulse system has been used successfully for years in sports medicine, physical therapy, veterinary medicine and by professional athletic teams.

How many treatments are needed?
In most cases, the pain relief lasts longer with each successive treatment, and many patients see a cumulative effect. Typically four to sixteen treatments are necessary, depending on the severity and duration of the injury, age, general health and lifestyle.
